The Science Behind Micronutrient Personalisation

Why "one pill for everyone" is a manufacturing decision — not a scientific one.

The multivitamin aisle is built on a comfortable assumption: that human nutritional needs are close enough to identical that a single formula can serve everyone. The evidence doesn't support that. Requirements shift with age, sex, life stage, training load, stress, sleep, diet quality, gut health, medications and season. Personalisation isn't a marketing gloss — it's what the biology actually asks for.

1. Bioavailability, not "milligrams on the label"

The number on a bottle is the dose inside the product. What your body receives depends on bioavailability — the fraction that actually gets absorbed, transported and used. That fraction is moved by:

  • Nutrient form. Magnesium bisglycinate, oxide and citrate behave very differently. So do folate vs folic acid, or heme vs non-heme iron.
  • Delivery format. A compressed tablet has to disintegrate; granules that disperse in water are effectively pre-released.
  • Food matrix. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) absorb far better with a meal that contains fat.
  • Gut health. Stomach acid, transit time and the microbiome all change absorption.

Two multivitamins with identical labels can deliver radically different usable doses. That's why format and form are part of the science, not an afterthought.

2. Nutrients don't act alone — they interact

Micronutrients form a web, not a list. A short menu of well-established interactions:

NutrientsWhat happens
Vitamin D3 + K2Work together on calcium handling; commonly paired.
Iron + calciumCompete for absorption; taking together blunts iron uptake.
Iron + vitamin CVitamin C substantially improves absorption of non-heme iron.
Zinc + copperLong-term high zinc can lower copper status; ratio matters.
Magnesium + vitamin DMagnesium is a cofactor in the activation of vitamin D.

A generic multivitamin has to compromise across all of these. A personalised formula can favour the pairings that serve your goal and separate the ones that fight each other.

3. Individual variation is the rule, not the exception

"The average adult needs X" hides enormous person-to-person spread. A few of the biggest drivers:

  • Age. B12 absorption drops with age; vitamin D synthesis in skin declines.
  • Sex and life stage. Menstruating women lose iron monthly; pregnancy raises folate, iodine and iron demand; perimenopause shifts requirements again.
  • Training load. Heavy training increases turnover of magnesium, electrolytes and antioxidants.
  • Diet pattern. Plant-based diets often need B12 and iron attention; low-oily-fish diets often need omega-3.
  • Geography and season. Higher latitudes and winter months routinely produce widespread vitamin D shortfall.
  • Genetics. Common polymorphisms (e.g. MTHFR) affect how efficiently folate is metabolised.

You can hand-wave over that variation with a single fixed formula — or you can respect it.

4. Format is part of the dose

The most elegant nutrient stack still has to survive the delivery format. Compressed tablets need binders, disintegrants and lubricants to exist as tablets — inert filler that eats space and slows release. Gummies trade active dose for sugar and a soft matrix that degrades faster. Capsules improve on tablets but still have to be swallowed whole and are limited in how much they can hold.

Bioniq's BioMatrix takes a different route: each nutrient is embedded in its own small granule tuned for stability and release. The whole dose disperses in water, which does two things at once — it removes the disintegration bottleneck and it makes it physically possible to deliver up to 35 nutrients in a single scoop without a shelf of pills.

5. What "personalisation" means in practice with Bioniq

  • A wellness assessment maps your body, lifestyle and goals to one of 40 base formulas.
  • Up to 35 nutrients are chosen and dosed for that formula — not a shelf's worth of overlapping bottles.
  • BioMatrix granules deliver everything in one scoop, so the routine actually gets taken.
  • Formula updates over time as your goals and life stage change.

The honest limits

Personalisation isn't magic. A supplement — however well tuned — sits on top of sleep, food, training and stress, not instead of them. And no product replaces medical care for a specific condition. What personalisation does do is remove the biggest weakness of the generic model: giving everyone the same nutrients at the same dose in a format built for the factory, not for you.
